The preparations for this year’s Code Summer Camp are in full swing! For the 11th year in a row, young minds will gather to explore the world of programming and digital creativity. More than just a summer activity, Code Summer Camp plays a vital role in securing the future talent pipeline for Sweden’s booming tech industry.
From camp participant to future engineer
One of the camp’s success stories is Petra Borgström, who attended the very first Code Summer Camp. Now, ten years later, she is studying to become a civil engineer in technical physics and electrical engineering—and she’s returning to the camp as a coach.
“My parents are programmers, so I was always exposed to tech, but Code Summer Camp really opened my eyes to how broad programming actually is. I remember thinking: this is something I want to continue with. The camp deepened my interest and was a big reason why I chose to pursue engineering. Now, coming back as a coach is an exciting opportunity. I look forward to sharing my experience and inspiring more young people to explore technology,” says Petra.

The importance of dedicated coaches
A crucial part of making the camp a great experience is the dedicated coaches. Ellen Sörnäs worked as a coach both in 2022 and 2023 during her studies in computer science. For her, the camp is about more than just teaching kids how to code—it’s about encouraging creativity and breaking down stereotypes in the tech industry.
“This is a great way to open up your eyes to programming. There’s still a specific stereotype when people think about engineering, and the camp helps to eliminate that and broaden the perspective,” says Ellen.
She emphasizes that programming should be fun and accessible for everyone.
“The kids get to create what they want; there are no strict rules. It’s more about exploration, and I’m there to support them when they get stuck. I’ve seen everything from Rick Astley-themed websites to creative gaming projects.”

Why Companies Should Get Involved
The camp is not just a summer experience for kids—it is a key investment in Sweden’s tech talent development. By engaging in Code Summer Camp, companies and organizations contribute to a stronger, more diverse, and skilled workforce in the Swedish tech industry.
“That more people discover technology, become interested in, and gain knowledge about programming and AI is important for all of Sweden and Sweden’s future. Digital competence and knowledge in technology and IT will not only be important but directly crucial for the workforce of the future,” says Mattias Hellström, project manager at Skill and for Code Summer Camp.
