NIRA Dynamics is taking the next step in their innovation investment and joins Linköping Science Park’s startup collaboration platform IndX. We have talked to Otto Johansson, Head of Innovation at NIRA Dynamics, who reveals why it’s time for them to explore opportunities beyond their current industry.
Headquartered in Linköping, Sweden, with its primary office and development hub in Mjärdevi, NIRA Dynamics specializes in advanced software solutions that leverage existing vehicle sensors. Their technology is extensively used for on-board diagnostics, but also able to collect real-time road condition data – such as surface slipperiness and pavement quality, sending information to authorities like Trafikverket, for road surface monitoring.

“We’re ready to explore areas beyond the automotive industry, and IndX can help us identify promising directions and partners,” Otto explains.
Looking for new ideas through collaboration
“So far, we have done a great job ourselves innovating internally and developing our products with new features. However, that only takes us so far – we need to start collaborating with others to stay competitive, and startups play a crucial role here,” Otto says.
Thinking beyond software and cars
Historically, NIRA Dynamics has focused on software development. But the door is now open to new possibilities.
“That’s what IndX is all about. Just because we’ve always developed software doesn’t mean we have to stick to it forever. Developing hardware or providing services could be our next step, and a startup with the right idea could help us make that happen,” Otto explains.
Finding new ways to collect data
Today, NIRA Dynamics collects data from existing car sensors. Through IndX, they hope to explore new ways to gather data.
“We’re especially interested in startups that analyze vehicle fleets, for example trucks and forklifts, or work with new kinds of sensors. By combining our strengths, we could create something really exciting,” Otto says.
“We’re stepping into something completely new, and that’s part of the excitement. Maybe this is the first step to develop something totally new for our customers.”
