It was an evening defined by optimism, energy, and collaboration as Science Park Update put the spotlight on AI and the region’s unique position. Through a combination of panel discussions, dialogue, and group interaction, representatives from industry, academia, and the public sector gathered to explore how we together can shape the future of AI.

Linköping has established itself as one of Europe’s leading AI hubs, driven by strong collaboration between research, industry, and society. During the evening, we heard from representatives of companies, Saab and Ericsson, as well as researchers from Linköping University and the Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP). Together, they highlighted the parallel investments currently being made in AI infrastructure and talent development that are positioning the region at the forefront of technological innovation.

Enormous potential – but direction is decided within each company

One clear takeaway from the evening was that the opportunities ahead are vast. With access to powerful computing capacity and deep expertise, companies in the region have a unique opportunity.

A central insight resurfaced throughout the discussions: technology in itself creates no value unless it is put into action. Oscar Spaak, Project Manager for AI Öst says:

“We will have significant opportunities going forward, both in terms of computing power and expertise. Ultimately, it’s up to each individual company to define a direction and start working.”

Pride and curiosity about the future

Yvonne Rosmark, Program Director at Innovair, shared her reflections:

“It was an inspiring evening, and I feel proud as a resident of Linköping of the expertise we have in our region.”

She was particularly struck by Anders Ynnerman’s reflections on how AI can be used to address complex challenges. Yvonne also highlighted the aviation industry as an area where AI’s impact has only just begun.

“Gripen fighter jets have already been flown with AI. But perhaps we can plan and optimize capabilities in entirely new ways.”

Anders Ynnerman discusses the transformative potential of AI in solving some of today’s toughest problems.

Humans at the center, technology as an enabler

Sara Karlsson, Project Manager & Cluster Manager at AI-Shift Labs and Aerospace Cluster Sweden (ACS), reflects that the technology itself is not the most essential part.

“It’s not about the technology itself, but about how we as humans use it to enable entirely new things, things we have never done before and perhaps didn’t even know were possible.”

She pointed out that professional roles are evolving alongside technological development and that we must consider which skills future education should focus on. Companies have a responsibility to upskill their employees so they can understand, recognize, and leverage the opportunities and benefits of AI.

When asked whether AI will replace humans, Sara was clear in her reasoning:

“AI will not replace humans, it will reinforce them.”

Collaboration that takes Linköping to the next level

Through parallel AI initiatives and close collaboration between academia and industry, the region continues to strengthen its role as one of the country’s most forward-looking AI environments.
